A lot of people buy something natural and handmade and then spend weeks worrying they're going to ruin it. You're not going to ruin it. Rattan, seagrass and water hyacinth have been used in homes for generations. They're made to live with you, not just look good in photos.

That said, they are natural materials. They're not plastic. They don't want to be treated like plastic. And once you know what they actually need, taking care of them becomes second nature.

Let's go through it.

Rattan Care Guide

This rattan care guide covers everything you need - from AC damage to spills to long-term maintenance. The biggest thing with rattan, especially if you're in the UAE, is air conditioning. Direct AC blowing onto rattan all day is what dries it out and eventually causes it to crack. It's not dramatic and it doesn't happen overnight, but if you have a rattan piece sitting right under a vent, it's worth moving it or redirecting the airflow. That one small thing will make a real difference over time.

Other than that, rattan is pretty easygoing.

Dust it with a soft cloth or brush whenever you do your regular cleaning. If something spills on it, wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Don't soak it, don't leave it wet, and don't put it through anything it doesn't need. It doesn't need special sprays or polishes. Water and a cloth is genuinely enough.

Keep it away from hours of direct sunlight too. A bit of sun is completely fine. An afternoon of harsh direct light every single day will fade it over time.

One thing that might surprise you: rattan actually does better with a little humidity than in a very dry environment. So if your home isn't blasting cold air 24 hours a day, your rattan pieces are quietly thriving. Rattan decor is one of the most sustainable choices you can make for your home and it rewards you for looking after it.

Seagrass

Seagrass is naturally more moisture resistant because, well, it grows in water. So it's a little more forgiving than rattan when it comes to spills and humidity.

The care is simple. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth when you need to, let it dry on its own, and dust it regularly. That's really it.

What you want to avoid is soaking it or leaving it sitting wet for any length of time. It handles moisture well but it's not waterproof and it doesn't want to stay damp. And please skip the chemical cleaners. They're not necessary and they'll strip the natural colour and weaken the fibres over time. Water and a cloth will always be enough.

Seagrass also lightens with prolonged sun exposure, so if you have a seagrass piece in a very sunny spot it will slowly change colour. Some people love how it ages. Just good to know.

In the UAE climate, seagrass genuinely holds up well. The humidity that drives us all a little crazy half the year is actually doing your seagrass a quiet favour.

Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth has a slightly lighter, softer texture than rattan or seagrass and it's one of our favourite materials to work with. It's also one of the easiest to care for.

Same basics apply: wipe clean with a damp cloth, dry it straight away, dust it regularly, and keep it away from extreme heat and direct AC.

One thing worth knowing about water hyacinth specifically: it often has the most natural variation in colour and texture between pieces. If yours looks a little different from what you saw in the photos, that's completely normal. That's what handmade looks like. It's not a flaw. It's the material being itself.

The One Thing That Matters Most

All three of these materials, rattan, seagrass and water hyacinth, will tell you when they're getting dry. They'll start to look a little dull or feel slightly more brittle than usual. If that happens, a very light wipe with a barely oiled cloth (a tiny amount of linseed oil does the job beautifully) will bring them back. You really don't need much.

And if you ever notice something and you're not sure what to do about it, just message us. On WhatsApp, on Instagram, wherever you find us easiest. We would genuinely rather you ask than stress about it alone.

They're Made to Last

Natural materials age. And the good news is they age beautifully. A rattan basket

that's two or three years old has a warmth and character that's impossible to manufacture. These pieces aren't meant to look perfect forever. They're meant to become part of your home.

That's the whole point of bringing them in in the first place.

Take care of them, and these sustainable, natural pieces will take care of the feeling in your space for a very long time, whether you're in Dubai or anywhere across the UAE.
